Erika Urban is the owner and director of River Valley Birth Center as well as one of the midwives.
Erika became a Certified Professional Midwife in 2009 after spending her student years learning home birth midwifery care in Wisconsin and birth center midwifery care in El Paso, Texas. Erika is a Licensed Midwife in the state of Minnesota. She moved her family to St Peter in the summer of 2009 with the intention of starting a home birth practice in an underserved area and completely fell in love with South Central Minnesota. Shortly after starting her home birth practice, Erika began working on her plans to open a freestanding birth center. It took many years of hard work and dedication, but the doors of River Valley Birth Center finally opened in 2014. Erika has a passion for rural healthcare and providing maternity care options for families, so running a birth center in a small community is a perfect fit.
Professionally, Erika stays busy with running a practice and participating in birth related organizations. She is active in the Minnesota Council for Certified Professional Midwives (MCCPM) and served on the board from 2013-2015. Erika also served as the president of the Deep Valley Birth Collective from 2012-2015 and now maintains an active membership. She enjoys teaching midwifery students and is a clinical preceptor for several midwifery schools as well as a nurse practitioner program.
While it is rare for Erika to be away from work, when she does take some time outside of the big purple house, she spends almost all of that time with her family. She has been married to Joe since 2000 and together they have 4 amazing children. She enjoys reading and if she is stuck driving someplace, you can be sure she is listening to an audiobook. Erika also enjoys running and prefers muddy, quiet, private trails to running on the streets. She enjoys taking on large projects such as home renovations (or opening a birth center) and tends to be energetic and enthusiastic about each project she takes on. She also is an avid story teller and tends to share these day-to-day events in a long-winded and humorous way on Facebook while taking inspiration from her idol, David Sedaris.
