Sarah Barbosa became a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), Licensed Midwife (LM) in the spring of 2017 after graduating from the Direct-Entry Midwifery program at SWTC in Wisconsin. Sarah has long been involved in the southern Minnesota birth community and the River Valley Birth Center. She has been a part of the RVBC team since it opened in 2014, first as a student midwife, then as an assisting midwife and most recently as a licensed, staff midwife. She has taken great joy in seeing the birth center blossom and grow in its goal of providing competent and respectful, woman-centered care to the women of Southern Minnesota.
Sarah is an active member of the Minnesota Council for Certified Professional Midwives (MCCPM) and of the Deep Valley Birth Collective (DVBC). Sarah is currently serving as the President of the Deep Valley Birth Collective.
In her pre-midwife life, Sarah was a preschool teacher, childcare provider and childbirth educator. Her passion for teaching expresses itself as she guides women and their families through the twists and turns of their pregnancy, birth and postpartum care. She has a special place in her heart for rural midwifery care and is passionate about providing access to the midwife-model of care for all women.
Sarah grew up on her family’s farm in rural Gaylord, MN. She met her husband, Sam, when they were students at Bethany Lutheran College. They currently live in Mankato with their two teenage children and their elderly dog. When not at the birth center, Sarah is most likely on the sidelines of a soccer field, cheering on her kids and their teams. Although school and clinicals were all-consuming for the last few years, Sarah is rediscovering some of her past loves: running, reading and spending time at her family’s cabin in northern Minnesota.
